CU Utility Plant & Distribution

Miro was the civil engineer with RMH Group, for design of the Steam and Chilled Water Plant northeast of the Coors Events Center. The 74,000 square foot plant has a capacity of 400,000 pounds per hour steam boilers and 12,000 tons of chilled water. The project includes extensive medium-voltage power and compressed air distribution.

Working from the project master plan, the team designed approximately 13,230 feet of new steam and chilled water distribution systems that extend westward from the new Plant into the main Campus. The majority of the systems are direct-bury, but approximately 500 feet of the steam system is in new tunnel extending to the existing Business tunnel. Extensive on-site investigation and coordination was performed by the team during master planning, to understand existing underground utility alignments, topography and geotechnical characteristics of the system’s alignment, prior to design. Given the congested nature of the existing corridors, alternative alignments were evaluated to minimize construction and operational impact.

The project was recognized as the 2015 ENR Best Project Winner in the Energy/Industrial category.
