Structural and civil engineering for a five-level, 240,000 sf mixed-use facility incorporating a post office and retail space in the first floor with parking above. The first floor features 13,100 sf of post office space supported by a 20,000 sf loading dock and 12,800 sf of retail. The loading dock accommodates large delivery vehicles through the use of 60’ clear spans which required a large column transfer wall supporting three stories of parking above. The garage is constructed using post-tensioned concrete with 637 parking spaces. Mixes used in parking deck construction included chemical additives and silica fume to densify the concrete and protect reinforcing. Moisture protection of the post office and retail spaces on the first floor required the use of secondary slabs over a drainage layer and waterproof membrane applied to the structural deck. Civil engineering included analysis of the estimated water, sanitary and storm sewer demands for the proposed Justice Center, as well as new service lines required to reach existing trunk lines. The project achieved LEED® Silver certification.
